With tremendous gratitude for the extraordinary care given to our two little girls at the Georgetown NICU, we bid those wonderful people farewell. As Maggie before her, Bea was unhooked from her NICU wires, rehooked to her new apnea monitor wires, put in a carseat for which she was just barely big enough, and headed out the door. Nurse Janet took the photo of the three of us ready to go, Maggie's carseat sitting in what had been her crib. Next up is a stunned (Excited? Dazed?) Heidi in the backseat in between her two daughters, now fully our responsibility for the first time in just over a month since they made their grand entrance. And finally an image of home, specifically the living room with its custom baby-just-arrived-and-looks-like-a-bomb-went-off design. As one dear visitor remarked: Love what you've done to the place! Now the fun part begins...

We are so excited for you all that the NICU chapter is finished. Now comes all the fun of settling in, you'll do a fine job I'm sure.

WOOO HOOOO!!! The Applegate clan at home! How exciting for you all. Don't worry, you don't look that stunned or dazed (and even if you're feeling it, all totally normal ... even for those of us with 'just' one baby!). I remember getting home from the hospital with Ben and all his accouterments and thinking, "OMG, now what do we do?!?!" Now he'll soon be 9, and Max almost 6, so we can't have been doing too badly. (-;
ReplyDeleteLove the pic of your living room; isn't it amazing that such tiny creatures can need so much stuff?!? That won't change for a while (we figure when they start wanting tiny expensive toys, like iPods, is when we'll miss the seas of cars/trains/planes/etc. that we still live with (-; ).
Keep posting pics ... can't wait! Congratulations from the Anderson clan (Seattle outpost)!
PS My mom is in Alexandria until Thursday (then off to NL), in case you want a visitor and/or back-up set of arms. She is a total baby magnet/uber-Oma!

ReplyDeleteHow exciting that the whole family is finally home. I hope your first 30 hours or so have gone well.
Now that you're home and people will want to come visit, don't forget Applegate's Second Law of Neonatology: Visitors have to bring dinner for the parents -- not to eat with you, but to leave for you to heat up and eat when the time comes. It's time for everybody to be taking care of the parents so that you have energy to take care of the babies.
Applegate's First Law of Neonatology is: Babies Are Cute. (I"m glad to see that Maggie and Bea are obeying that one.)

Watch out for that super-duper stroller. It looks a bit like the leaning tower of Pisa, and Bea (or is that Maggie) is definitely downwind of it. (On the other hand, the Leaning Tower is probably one of the most stable edifices on earth--Dave would know...)
